I was going to write about how it’s utterly ridiculous that people are getting their panties in a was over a shirt JC Penny tried to sell, but then, due to social media pressure, took off their shelves. Because really, people, it’s a shirt. If you are offended by it, don’t buy it. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. But apparently social media has saved the day once again and has convinced JC Penny to pull the shirt from their shelves, thereby cutting into JCP’s profits and the company that manufactures the shirt. Way to help the economy social media. Oh and thank you for saving me from making a horrific clothing purchase. The graphics on that shirt are hideous.
Then I did a couple of Google searches and found out, I am in the minority. Well, clearly I’m in the minority, JCP pulled the shirt. What I don’t understand is this, It’s a shirt. It’s not going to single handedly crush some girl’s self esteem.
And if your panties are in a wad over JCP’s shirt, why isn’t someone jumping up and down screaming at Old Navy for this shirt? ![]()
Old Navy is marketing this shirt to boys and apparently nobody seems to care. So we’ll get our panties in a wad because a girl has managed to delegate her homework to her brother, showing great management potential, but it’s quite alright for our boys to just play stupid altogether. Know what else won’t be in his vocabulary? Job.
It this economy, with an election coming up, when unemployment is at it’s highest, and there are two games left of the World Series, I’m pretty sure there are way more important things to get your panties in a wad about besides kids shirts. Great you can rally around and get a shirt pulled from the shelves of JC Pennys all across the country. Now use your powers for good, not for something as trivial as kids fashion.
Looks like I wrote that blog post after all.

I have to disagree with you on this one. I think it’s more than just a shirt – it’s a way of making little girls believe that looks are the most important thing. Don’t we get enough of that so as it is? The Old Navy shirt doesn’t have the same message, because it’s not stating that the boy’s looks are so superior that his sister, or anyone uglier than him, is being forced to do the work.
Personally, I don’t see it just as a sexist issue – to me it’s an issue of valuing looks over intelligence. Isn’t that a decent “greater good” for social media to be using its power for?

@Jenn [ Crippled Girl ], I think all the hoopla over a shirt is excessive. It’s a shirt. If we start pulling shirts because people are offended and “it sends the wrong message” how long before we stop playing songs, producing movies, writing books, watching television shows? If we’re going to pull everything that offends someone or sends the wrong message and not teach our children that they are more than the message society preaches then welcome to George Orwell’s 1984

I’m so tired of parents wanting to shield their kids from everything. Is the shirt sexist? Maybe. Is there a shit load of sexism out in the real world that our children are going to have to deal with one day? YES. And not just when they’re adults. Kids have to deal with seeing offensive things all over the place. I saw a man wearing a “Fuck you, I’m from Texas” shirt to Walmart the other day. So it’s perfectly okay for kids to see cuss words all over shirts, but heaven forbid they read THAT shirt and immediately think, “I NEED TO BE PRETTY.”
You know, I don’t think people give kids enough credit. Let them form their own decisions. Let them learn how to think for themselves instead of never giving them a chance to even try.

@Sara, Oh but see, if we allow our children to actually have original thoughts, form their own opinions, and live life in the real world they won’t be the close minded asshats their parents were. And we can’t be having that.
